The main point of the Blog, is to always keep it real. I sick and tired of people being "politically correct" all the time. For once say whats really on your mind.
I think Howard has more flavor than Harvard, but let's face the facts: a degree from Havard is weighed more than a degree from Howard. I wish we didn't have to put a price on the black experience one gets in an HBCU, but we have to look at the numbers because they don't lie. A Harvard degree will give you a higher income after graduation.
Now let me be real, Harvard seems very traditional and uptight to me. BUT I feel like, in order, to have be sense as intelligent, we (as black people) have to assert ourselves in the mainstream realm as well as the black world. Being the Student Body President of Harvard opens many doors that being a student body president of Howard could only dream of.
Maybe I'm being rash and not giving people the benefit of the doubt, but of what I know of networking, people bring in people who are like them. I agree with cdonnerson in that our predominately white society will more readily hire the Havard graduate. The world is intimidated by the overt blackness an HBCU implies.
So, weighing the pros and cons, I would go to Havard. I would rather go to an Ivy League and then use my networking to bring more of my people up with me.
I hope this didn't sound too elitist or whatever...
uhm, personally Howard..
ReplyDeleteI was actually accepted there, but decided against going. Harvard is a good school and all but I don't think the environment would be right..
However, I don't think an HBCU would be all that great of an envrionment either because of
1] too many black people..sorry its true
2] not enough funding because its a private, black institution
and
3] i wouldnt be prepared for a predominantly WHITE society such as the USA..
so Howard beats out Harvard.. but my current PWI that I attend beats out Howard :/
